Got a notice? Here’s what it means.

Most notices are routine and close quickly when answered on time. Find yours by what it says, and see what it takes to answer it.

Income tax notice

Intimation after your return is processed

Act this week

Any demand is usually payable within 30 days. Check the notice for the exact date.

What it means

The department has processed your return and compared it with its own computation. The result is one of three: no change, a refund, or a demand because some figures differ.

Common reasons

  • Tax credits in your return don’t match Form 26AS or the AIS
  • A deduction or loss was not allowed during processing
  • Differences in interest or arithmetic

What we’ll need

  • The intimation
  • Your filed return and computation
  • Form 26AS and the AIS for the year

What we do

  1. 01Compare the department’s computation with your return, line by line
  2. 02If the demand is wrong, file a rectification or respond online
  3. 03If it is right, work out the exact payment and pay it before the date

General guidance only. Every notice states its own deadline and requirements, and those always take precedence.

Questions

Before you reply

Should I reply to a notice myself?

Simple intimations can often be handled online, but a wrong reply can make a matter harder to close. Have a CA look at it before you respond, especially for scrutiny, demand or cancellation notices.

How do I know a notice is genuine?

Income tax communications carry a document identification number (DIN) that you can check on the e-filing portal, and GST notices appear on the GST portal under your login. Don’t act on links in a message; log in to the portal directly.

What if the deadline has already passed?

Act anyway. Portals often still accept a response, and there are ways to ask for more time or have an order corrected. The sooner a CA sees it, the more options you have.
